Creating a feng shui bedroom may be a mysterious and ancient approach to decorating, but it’s actually an intuitive and intentional use of space. Here, seven easy-to-implement feng shui elements to bring calming energy into your bedroom.

1. Anchor Your Bed

Since the bed is the most important element in the room, you’ll want to situate it in the command position—that is, a place where you can see the door (but aren’t in the direct line of it), with a solid wall behind it. Another feng shui bedroom tip is to make sure that your bed is anchored by a headboard, advises Anjie Cho, interior architect and feng shui designer in New York. “A headboard represents stability. You want a headboard that is solid without any perforations, like bars, which could represent imprisonment—in a relationship or with yourself.”

For centuries, the Chinese believed that there were invisible forces at work all around us, forces that, when optimized within an occupied space, can supercharge our well-being. Some refer to it as Chinese geomancy; others pass it off as early Taoist ideology. But most know it as feng shui. It’s a millennia-old belief system that—in our screen-driven, fast-paced, pandemic-and-politics-burnout moment—is more than ripe for re-exploration.

Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that influences the flow of life force energy, or Qi, to bring people into harmony with their environment. You can utilize elements of feng shui in your home by orienting furniture and placing objects to redirect the flow of Qi in an auspicious way. 

Anjie Cho is a New York-based architect and interior designer who specializes in feng shui. "Feng shui examines how we shape our environment so it can support us rather than deplete us or make our life more difficult with obstacles," she says. "The bedroom is one of the most private spaces in the home. You spend a great amount of time sleeping in bed, in an unconscious, receptive state, and you absorb the Qi of your bedroom."

Qi nourishes us, and in the bedroom, feng shui can promote feelings of love, intimacy, and well-being, and even promote healthy sexual relationships. On the other hand, if the bedroom is unbalanced, this could create feelings of strife and discomfort. Cho shares her top tips for achieving a more harmonious bedroom here.
