Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui for Your Bed

I’ve heard that it’s a good idea to replace your bed linens often. Why is that?

Your bed represents you, so it’s one of the best places to implement feng shui adjustments. One simple thing you can do is to take care of your bed, and acknowledge the preciousness of your bed and the support it offers you.

One way to care for your bed and acknowledge its support is to regularly change your bed linens, and to buy the highest quality bed linens you can. You spend a great deal of time in bed, and you are surrounded by your bed linens for about a third of your life. Take a moment to audit your bed linens: are they non toxic? Organic? Are they of high quality? Are they full of holes? All of this reflects upon you.

Also, your skin is your largest organ, and you absorb the energetics of how and what your bed linens are made from. This means that it’s helpful to pay attention to them, refresh them often, and keep them clean.

When it’s time to let your bedding go, there are a lot of ways you can repurpose or recycle it. I like to donate my old sheets to animal shelters. You can also find textile recycling nearby, or cut them up and use them as rags.

Feng Shui Tips for Bedrooms

If you’re not sure where to get started with feng shui, I suggest taking a look at your bedroom. First, it can be easier to lay the bagua on a single room rather than your whole house. Second, adjustments in your bedroom can be very effective because your bedroom represents you. Your bedroom environment also influences your ability to rest and reset your stress levels, which can have a big impact on the rest of your life.

Because of this, it’s important to make your bedroom a soothing, relaxing space. Start by removing any objects that are too energizing or engaging, like books, electronics, and work projects. Having these things around you when you are trying to relax can cause more stress and make it more difficult to sleep.

It’s also important to make sure your bed is in the commanding position. To do this, place your bed in such a way that you can see the door when you are lying in bed, but are not directly in line with the door. This way, you can be more at ease when you are resting or sleeping because you are able to see anyone or anything that could be approaching. If you’re unable to place your bed in command, you can also add a mirror that allows you to see a reflection of the door from your bed instead of the actual door.

Next, choose colors for your bedroom that are supportive and soothing. Blues and greens are great colors for bedrooms because they’re healing and peaceful. They represent life energy, and are colors we naturally find in nature. Try not to use too much white, because it can be stressful on the eyes, like looking at snow with no sunglasses. Red and yellow are very stimulating, so they’re best used as accents.

It’s also helpful to consider the color of your bed linens. Because you spend so many passive hours in bed taking in the energy of your surroundings, the color of your bedding can impact your mood and energy. White can be a bit harsh here as well, so you may want to try a softer ivory instead. Deep reds and purples are good choices if you want to call in more passion, and earthy colors like yellow can help you feel more stable and supported.

It’s also important to choose colors that you love. There are so many potential color palettes, and the best one for you will depend on your preferences and life situation. Pay attention to what you’re drawn to and how you feel around certain colors. How do you feel in your bedroom now? Is there a change you could make that would make you feel more at ease?

Q&A Sunday: Bed Linens for Peach Blossom Luck

Hi Anjie. I read the part in your book about using the color peach to attract a romantic partner. I’m moving into a new place in just a few days, and I’ve been on the lookout for peach colored sheets. The closest I can find is coral. Will that work, or do I need to keep hunting for peach and buy some cheaper ones in the meantime? Finally, will peach enhance self love, or just bring romantic love?

Shanna G., Austin, TX

Hi Shanna, thanks for reading my book! The idea with the peach is related to “peach blossom luck” in feng shui. Peach is an auspicious color for attracting a romantic partnership. If you want to use this color for this reason, you can paint your walls peach, wear peach, or even purchase peach-colored linens as you’ve asked about. (Or you can even do all three!)

Coral is more of a bright, sunny orange color. With peach blossom luck, we’re looking for a more flesh-like color, with more white in it. A good guide would be Benjamin Moore 2014-60 Whispering Peach, shown here.

I advise you to find the right color sheets and do not buy the coral ones. They will not be a suitable substitute. However, if you have trouble finding the right color sheets, you can try other things that I’ve suggested above: painting the walls, wearing peach, or even just adding peach accents to your bed, like the throw in the photo above.

I’d also like to answer your very thoughtful question about self-love and the color peach. Since peach is somewhere in between a very soft pink and orange, color-wise, pink is related to the Relationship area while orange is related to the Health area of the feng shui bagua map. The relationship area does cultivate self-love. Both the relationship and health areas also connect to the element of Earth which is about self-care and boundaries. So, I would say yes. Just by taking the time to activate a feng shui adjustment to support your desire to have a partner is a kindness to yourself, and you need self-love to attract the right partner.

Last thing to remember, once you find your relationship you can let the peach go. My teachers have noted if you keep using the peach you may attract other partners! And you only need one, right? :)
