Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice that influences the flow of life force energy, or Qi, to bring people into harmony with their environment. You can utilize elements of feng shui in your home by orienting furniture and placing objects to redirect the flow of Qi in an auspicious way.

Anjie Cho is a New York-based architect and interior designer who specializes in feng shui. "Feng shui examines how we shape our environment so it can support us rather than deplete us or make our life more difficult with obstacles," she says. "The bedroom is one of the most private spaces in the home. You spend a great amount of time sleeping in bed, in an unconscious, receptive state, and you absorb the Qi of your bedroom."

Qi nourishes us, and in the bedroom, feng shui can promote feelings of love, intimacy, and well-being, and even promote healthy sexual relationships. On the other hand, if the bedroom is unbalanced, this could create feelings of strife and discomfort. Cho shares her top tips for achieving a more harmonious bedroom here.

Q&A Sunday: Feng Shui for Your Bed

I’ve heard that it’s a good idea to replace your bed linens often. Why is that?

Your bed represents you, so it’s one of the best places to implement feng shui adjustments. One simple thing you can do is to take care of your bed, and acknowledge the preciousness of your bed and the support it offers you.

One way to care for your bed and acknowledge its support is to regularly change your bed linens, and to buy the highest quality bed linens you can. You spend a great deal of time in bed, and you are surrounded by your bed linens for about a third of your life. Take a moment to audit your bed linens: are they non toxic? Organic? Are they of high quality? Are they full of holes? All of this reflects upon you.

Also, your skin is your largest organ, and you absorb the energetics of how and what your bed linens are made from. This means that it’s helpful to pay attention to them, refresh them often, and keep them clean.

When it’s time to let your bedding go, there are a lot of ways you can repurpose or recycle it. I like to donate my old sheets to animal shelters. You can also find textile recycling nearby, or cut them up and use them as rags.

Q&A Sunday: The Best Feng Shui Bed Position

What is the best way to position a bed in feng shui?

This is a great question, because your bedroom is an especially important area of your home in feng shui. Your bedroom represents you, and changes you make to this part of your home can be really effective. Your bed in particular is even more closely connected to you, and since you spend so many passive hours there sleeping, your bed really has an impact on your energy.

When it comes to the position of your bed, you first want to make sure your bed is in the commanding position. This means that you can see the door while lying in bed, without being directly in line with the door. This allows you to feel safer and less stressed, because you can see anyone or anything that might come in through the door. The commanding position is especially important for your bed, because feeling safe and at ease here will allow you to rest and sleep more deeply. If it’s not possible to set up your bed so that you can see the door, place a mirror so that you can see a reflection of the door instead.

You also want to avoid being in the coffin position. This is when you’re lying in bed and your feet are pointing out the door. The coffin position is energetically draining and makes you more vulnerable. You’re also not in command. Ideally, don’t set up your bed in this way, but if you can’t avoid it, don’t panic! You can adjust this placement by hanging a feng shui crystal ball halfway between the bed and the door.

Lastly, make sure you’re supported by a solid wall. You want to have a stable wall right behind you and a stable headboard, such as this one, that is fastened to your bed frame. This will provide support for you while you’re laying in bed. Ideally, you don’t want your bed to be up against a window, especially if you tend to have low energy, if you feel fearful or unsafe, or if you’re on the ground floor. If you have no choice and you have to put your bed against the window, that’s ok. You have to work with what you have. In this case, make sure you have a solid headboard supporting you.

I hope that helps!
