Q&A Sunday: What Do Doors Represent in Feng Shui?

What do doors represent in feng shui?

In feng shui, doors represent the mouth of people in the home. Squeaky, stuck, or problematic doors may represent challenges in communication. This is especially true for the entry door, as this sets the mood for your experience of the home. The main door of the home sets the tone for your whole life experience, in a way. Your front door is how you connect to the world.

If you have a squeaky or crying door, it sets the tone for negativity every time you walk into your home. We’re conditioned to zone out and not notice a lot of what’s happening in our home, including what our door sounds like, but take a moment to pay attention to your front door. If it squeaks or gets stuck, this can represent blocks or difficulties in communication, so it’s a good idea to make sure everything is working properly and make any necessary repairs.

Finally, make sure you can open all the doors a full 90 degrees or more - this means no clutter behind the doors. I used to see that a lot: people often have so much stuff that they start hanging lots of things on the backs of doors until they can’t open all the way. Doors govern how qi comes into your space . If they can’t open fully, you’re cutting off some of the energy that could otherwise enter your space. That means that you’re only allowing in a small percentage of possible opportunities into your life. Think about it: if you have to modify the way you walk into the room, you’re not creating free and easy movement for you or for the energy in your home.

If you do have clutter behind your doors, though, don’t beat yourself up over it. There might be a reason you weren’t yet ready to receive all the opportunities. Maybe you were in preparation. Now that you know, you can decide for yourself if you would like to open up room for more opportunities to come in simply by removing anything that may be preventing you from opening your door all the way.

Q&A Sunday: Laying a Bagua with an Unused Front Door

I am a bit confused on how to lay the bagua map on my kitchen. I saw that for the entire house, it should be lain on the front door, whether it gets used or not, but my kitchen has the door we use all the time. It makes sense to me that that is where the bagua map should be aligned, but I want to make sure. The door we always use to come in and out of the house is on the east wall in the middle of the room, with the doorway to the rest of the interior of the house through the dining room on the south wall. If the map is aligned with the door to the dining room (since the kitchen is part of the greater whole of the house), that door would be in the benefactors gua, and the outside door would be in the completion gua

Hi Judy

Thanks for your email! I’m so glad you like the podcasts and blog. I’m glad it can help you.

We never got your floor plan. Our team did email you again, but didn’t hear back. You’re still welcome to send it in to info@holisticspaces.com. It is true that a picture can say a thousand words. But based on your question, let’s see what we can do!

Yes, the main bagua of the house is based on the formal front door, whether it’s used or not. As a reminder, be sure to use the front door periodically, maybe once every 9 days, to keep the qi active there. There are many many people who use their kitchen door more often than the front door. So you can have a secondary bagua map, however this is advanced. As a non-practioner, you should place the main bagua map based on your formal front door.

On a separate note, doors represent the mouth of the inhabitants. Doors are portals. The confusion with all the doors may indicate some confusion with the voices in the home. Perhaps there are too many voices? Or there are power struggles and it’s difficult to tell who’s in charge in the household. Food for thought!

Again, please do try to email us your floor plan! We’d love to help you out!

Feng Shui Tips for a Strong Front Door

featured on The Spruce

Activate the Mouth of Qi

In feng shui, one of the first places to look at in your home is the front door. You want to have a strong front door so that you can welcome positive energy. When qi can flow easily into your home, this energy brings along with it abundance and ease.

The front door refers to the official, formal front door of the home. It’s also referred to as the mouth of qi, the portal of energy. Some homes may have secondary doors that are used on a daily basis. This is okay, however the mouth of qi is your formal front door. If you never use it, you are block out energy and opportunities. Therefore, it’s essential to activate your front door regularly. You can do this by simply opening and walking through it at least every nine days. Daily is better. I recommend you make it part of your routine, like when you go for the mail, always walk through the front door.

De-clutter and Clean

Of all the areas in your home, the front door area is probably one of the more neglected areas when it comes to clutter and regular cleaning.

When is the last time you wiped down your front door? I’m talking about the interior side, the exterior side, and the edge. Incredible amounts of debris accumulate at the front door. Giving this area more attention ensures that positive energy can come into your home.
